WellChild
Over 100,000 children and young people are living with serious illness or exceptional health needs across the UK. Many spend months, even years in hospital because there is no support enabling them to leave. Our vision is for every child and young person living with serious health needs to have the best chance to thrive - properly supported at home with their families.

Children's Learning Disability and Behaviour Support Service - South
We are a team of experienced learning disability nurses and assistant practitioners. We are able to offer a service when a child or young person requires specialist support arising from their learning disability or autism and its impacts on their health. We often do this by working to advise parents or other health professionals working with that child.

Children's Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapists help children and young people who have difficulty doing everyday activities. This can be things like getting dressed, school work or playing.

If your child has been referred to Occupational Therapy, we may see them in your home, school or local clinic. We work with you to help make the changes needed to help the young person take part in the everyday activities they want and need to do.

Annual Health Checks
Learning Disability Health Checks
  • All people over the age of 14, who have a Learning Disability are entitled to an annual health check from their GP. This is free to everyone who is on their GPs Learning Disability register
  • This will involve an appointment of up to an hour (30 minutes with the Practice Nurse and 30 minutes with a doctor)
  • Annual Learning Disability health checks are important as it is recognised that they improve the health and wellbeing of people with Learning Disabilities
  • It enables information to be shared with local hospitals and emergency health care providers including reasonable adjustments someone may need if they contact them for help. This information is shared through hospital passports and "Summary Care Records with Additional Information"
  • It is an opportunity to promote healthy living advice, screening programmes and immunisations which we know that people with Learning Disabilities often miss out on.
How to get a learning Disability Health Check:
  • Ask your GP if you are on their Learning Disability Register
  • Request an "Annual Learning Disability Health Check" every year
  • Remember: you do not need to have any health problems or concerns prior to having this. It is a "health check" to make sure you stay well
